Brasiliana

A primeira coisa que talvez se devesse considerar ao se falar em preconceitos no Brasil é que parece haver algo que precede esses próprios preconceitos. Sejam eles "raciais", econômicos, de gênero e etc. E isto é que o brasileiro tem preconceito contra si mesmo enquanto um povo, ou seja, enquanto brasileiro. Preconceito quando consideram o brasileiro pouco confiável ou preguiçoso. É isso ou o contrário que é exatamente um preconceito às avessas: assumir que tudo que vem de nós é lindo, genuíno, porque "é isso que somos". Por um lado transforma-se a pobreza e ignorância em beleza; por outro, tomam-se todas as más manifestações como se estas fossem os únicos hábitos possíveis de advir de indivíduos que crescem nesta sociedade.

O caráter de um povo existe, não tenho dúvida. Cada povo possui suas particularidades e hábitos de vida próprios, mas o caráter dos povos não estão aliados a um discurso ideologicamente político. Até agora, todas as tentativas de identificar esse nosso caráter parecem ter sido feitas com o pressuposto político de esquerdas ou direitas. No fundo de tudo isso, parece que sabemos muito bem  o que somos. Só nos falta assumir; inclusive para mudarmos a nós mesmos.

The first thing one should have in mind when talking about the prejudices of brazilian people is that there is something that precedes all kind of prejudices, whether it is racial, economical, of gender and etc. And that is that brazilians seem to have prejudices against themselves as a people. Prejudice when considering themselves as unworthy of trust, as a lazy people. Is either that or its contrary, wich is a prejudice au contraire: assuming that anything that comes from ourselves is beautifull, is genuine, because that "the way we are". It´s either making all the poverty and ingorance the most beautifull thing or generalizing all our bad manifestations as they were the only possible habits one or another could have as individuals.

A caracther os a people exists, I have no doubt about it. Each people has its particularities and own life habits, but they´re not conected to a pressuposition that is ideologically political. So far, all the atempts to identify this caracther of ours seem to have been made with teh pressuposition of left an right wings. At the bottom of all of that, it seems to me that we know well what we are. The only thing that´s left is to assume it; specially so we can change it.
